I Hope John McCain is Okay

There are some people – a very rare few – whose character and authenticity transcend their particular positions in life (and politics). John McCain is such a person.
He is forthright and a pursuer of truth; he’s a man of dignity and humor (a great combination).
John (I feel as if the familiar is somehow appropriate. After all this time he’s almost one of the family.) – I repeat: John will always give as good as he gets, but there are places he won’t go, discourse that is beneath him. He has survived the multifarious, the weird, the banal, and the evil. His spirit and integrity remain intact. He is – if not universally beloved, then universally respected. And so, the great American deliberative body awaits his recovery.
To your health, John.

Bermuda, Shmermuda (tee shirt to follow)

Okay. So the ocean is an unnaturally gem-like turquoise; the landscape is low and lush and green. But the beach – the thing that you (that would be me) were looking forward to, is about 40 paces wide and that’s it.

There is no walking along the shore – which is, in life, one of my most favorite things to do. Bummer squared = meh.

But you know what Shakespeare said (and that would be Elliot – who has the shakes – Peer. You know him. He lives across the street. The guy who talks to himself in iambic pentameter: “Twas ever so. Verily. Tis pity she’s a whore.” (I just wanted to include that – it has no particular relevance.)

Oh – and it’s hot. Really annoyingly hot. Didn’t expect that.

A couple of other things to be acknowledged…The Bermudans are, without exception, friendly and helpful in a most natural and not cloying way.

Kinks: Many exist. But they are working themselves out. I won’t bore you with the litany of my 70- year-old rustiness, but I am confident that by the end of our stay, I will be rejuvenated. ‘Tis a consummation devoutly to be wished. Even though my PIC (remember him?) is certain that 70 is the age of no return.

Fearless Birds: The omnipresent sparrow-like little wing-ed beggars flying/hopping around the outside (and sometimes inside) tables. I’m surprised they’re not too fat to fly, given their eager (dare I say hoggish) attention to every crumb that falls from the tables. Perhaps they are the primary gatherers for a large tribe (gaggle?) of feathered folk who, I imagine, are anxiously twittering with stomachs a-rumbling.

Return from the dark side: Despite my earlier bitching (of which I say with pride I am a past master) this little island is growing on me. The air is soft. The water is just warm enough to allow N to go shirtless into the deep. The food is good and it seems as if anything we might desire will be provided if at all possible.

And yet. And yet. I must conclude in this manner: Quoth the Raven: “Fire Island.”

COOLSTEIN MEETS TRUMPSTEIN with a little help from BROWNSTEIN. And it all turns out so well.

Behold. The fates and other esoteric forces have congealed and landed on DJT. When the smoke and other foggy stuff clears, what is left is a new variation on the personage. As events unfold, he will be known as “The Good Trump.” Brownstein is the force of nature behind this transformation. She is a wizard after all. She can reconstitute and reshape energy. Her mission was to bring out the Best O’ Trump. Which actually is the name of a candy bar Coolie is now selling at the Shoppe. It’s a little like Good & Plenty except it’s made of Jujube’s and jam (it only sounds bad – but tastes pretty okay.) Miss B drew on all the available magic – any less would have been ineffective.

How does the world absorb and accommodate this shape-shifting? With a good old emotional smorgasbord.

First we have the dancing-in-the-street crowd. Are they happy? Have their dearest hopes been realized? You betcha! Many classic styles are represented. We have the tango-ers, the Hora circle, quite a fair number of jazz hands (and feet), some slow dancing cheek to cheeky folks, and a hearty few doing an earth-shaking Russian Kasatsky.

Then we have the celebrate-till-you-barf folks, the indulgers who have few – if any – realistic boundaries. Let’s just say they are prone to taking things to the extreme, and then driving a few more miles. They crash and burn pretty quickly, and their group hangover is painful to even think about.

My favorites are the new true believers. They always knew everything would turn out. So they say, but I recall a number of down-payments having been made on property in Costa Rica. There were go-bags packed and practice runs taken.

All that is now moot. Since the new Trump is kind and generous and a great listener and not a narcissist. I know. It’s hard to believe.

Could this all be an act, designed to suck us into a state of unprotected bliss, only to have our property nationalized and our freedoms amputated one by one? Could be. Nah. The Trumpster is not really clever enough to be that diabolical.

But wait: the coast is not really clear. There’s Bannon, who is (I’m quite certain) in league with Lucifer himself; and the one I fear most of all – Jared the Underestimated. Donald’s consigliere is about to be given access to the world. He is tasked with reinventing the federal government and bringing peace to the Middle East. Sure. He can do that…can’t he? After all he’s a bright lad with no real experience and that’s all it takes. And – we should ask – what does it mean that Trump trusts him so implicitly. How can that be a good thing?

Grab your gold and go to the bunkers. Now.

RANDOM NOTES FROM THE BEACH (They’re not that beachy)

The slow creep of time here is both wonderful (I can live forever) and terrible (oh, shit, am I going to live forever?) How to account for the sludging down of moments/minutes/hours/days?

What I forgot to bring: code numbers to access messages left on my office phone. This was only brought to my conscious awareness yesterday – day ten of my stay here. The forgetting is bad enough; but the complete lack of recall is a bit stunning. Either I’ve really lost it or I finally discovered how to go on a true vacation. I tend to think “A” is closer to the truth. But, all I can say is, “Oh, well.”

The market here is phenomenal – both in the breadth of its offerings and in the height of its prices. I just have one thing to say: $14 for a pound of chicken salad. Really.

I know it may seem a little confusing, but this is really two blogs in one: “Don’t Kill Your Neighbor” and “The Adventures of Coolie Coolstein.” If you want to start at the beginning of the 80 plus episodes of “Coolie,” go back to May, 2015, and begin at the beginning. If not, just enjoy… and thanks for reading.

My book is out in the world

As I mentioned the other day, I’ve written a science fiction book, Raymòn and Sunshine. Today it is actually out in the world. It’s available for sale on amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/Raym%C3%B2n-Sunshine-Karen-Krett/dp/0692660887/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1457617668&sr=8-2&keywords=karen+krett

This is both exciting and terrifying. I see the book as if it were my child. I very much want the child to grow and flourish, but it’s a little sad to see it leave home.

The inspiration for the book, which is about the relationship between an autistic man and a female android in the year 2262, came from my interaction with my beloved grandson, Alec.  And one of the main characters, Mov – a four legged, sentient, intelligent and verbal android companion to Sunshine (the female android) – arose full-fledged when I was walking by the shore in Fire Island. There he was! My son, Gregory, has been my editor and main support. Without him the book would not be as it is.

So much of this is a mysterious process; creativity feels like it comes from somewhere outside me. I am very grateful to have received this wonderful story, and I hope to share it with many people.

Karen
